How To Change An Automatic Chevy Truck Transmission

Chevy trucks truly are one of the most durable vehicles on the road, they are designed to last. However even the best built machinery occasionally may need a part replaced. The transmission is one item that may need to be eventually replaced once in the life of your truck. There are some basic steps to follow when changing an automatic Chevy truck transmission.

All Chevy truck models come with the option of an automatic or manual transmission. There are some differences between these two styles of transmissions. While they are both designed to change the gears on a vehicle when it is in motion, the basic difference is the amount of interaction required buy the driver. On a manual transmission the driver is responsible for changing the gears, while an automatic transmission does not need to interact with the transmission.

in order to change a Chevy truck transmission you will need to place the truck up on jack stands. The jack stands need to go in the back and front of the truck. Before climbing under the truck double check to make sure that it is not likely to fall.

Once under the vehicle provide some slack in the cables that run to the radiator. You will then need to use a wrench to loosen and remove the bolts that connect it to the rear of the car. At this point you need to move the drive shaft away.

Take the speedometer gear assembly out and place a transmission jack under the pan. With the jack in place you can lift it with the jack. The lower bell housing cover will need to come off. Then take off the convertor bolts, the cross member bolts and the housing bolts with the use of a wrench. At this point lift the transmission jack and remove the cross member.

While moving the transmission jack toward the back of the car lower the transmission. Be sure that you have unhooked everything. Be sure that the transmission clears the rear of the car.

Once you have removed the old transmission from the jack you can then place the new one on there and slide it into place under the car. Be sure to raise the new transmission as you move it into place. You will then hold the torque converter in while you turn it, stop turning when you hear it click.

Now you are ready to put the cross member back on, this includes putting the mount back in place, along with the cross member bolts, the bell housing boils, and the torque convertor bolts. Do not forget to put the speedometer gear assemly back in place and then slide the trans back where it belongs.

The final step of replacing an automatic Chevy truck transmission is to replace the vacuum lines to the moderator and connect the cable linkage shifter and throttle valve. The transmission has now been replaced. Carefully lower the truck back to the ground.
